Back Pain Treatment With Physiotherapy

Spine-related pain is extremely common. Back pain, sciatica, stiffness and tension, lumbago, disc degeneration and other back or neck-related issues can be debilitating and prevent you from fully undertaking your normal activities. Back pain treatment with physiotherapy can provide highly effective, lasting relief, as well as enabling you to increase your activities of daily living (ADLs).

Your physiotherapist will design specific rehabilitation and exercise programs to help you fully recover from your underlying health problem.

FAQ

What occurs at a physiotherapy assessment?

At your physiotherapy assessment, the goal is to detect the underlying problem, give you an accurate diagnosis and determine which treatment you will benefit most from. Our main priority is the health of our patients; if we don’t believe you’re well-suited to what we do, you will be referred elsewhere.

Our physiotherapists assess each patient using expert forms of testing to provide a diagnosis. Your physiotherapist can help you to understand the mechanism behind the trauma and provide ways to avoid further injury. Each patient is provided with an individualised rehabilitation and exercise plan specifically designed to effectively treat each condition. It can include any number of our available forms of therapy.

Do I need a referral?

Although some people do prefer to see a doctor to determine whether the physio would be beneficial, you can absolutely book in either online, in person or over the phone with us without a doctor’s referral. Our friendly receptionists will often ask if you have seen a physiotherapist before to allow us to best prepare for your appointment. We will also require some health history through our intake forms. Don’t know where to start? Give us a call to see what treatment would be the best for you!

Do I need to bring anything?

We strongly recommend that you bring any Private Health cards if you are covered for physiotherapy, as if we don’t have the card, we are unable to claim for you and you may have to claim with the given receipt. For all EPC’s we also require that you bring your EPC referral as well as a doctor’s letter.

If you have had any scans, X-rays, or doctors’ referrals it would be extremely advantageous to bring them along as well. It is encouraged to wear or bring clothes that make you feel most comfortable and that the physio will be able to access and assess the injured body part and surrounding areas. If the pain is associated with sports, it is a great idea to bring your sneakers so that we can determine if they are adding to the problem.

What might my physiotherapy involve?

Physiotherapy is typically a combination therapy that may include spinal mobilisation, sports massage techniques, trigger points, dry needling and focused rehab exercises. Our bodies need correct motion throughout the spine. If your body lacks that mobility and if left untreated, it can interfere with the vital exchange of signals through your body. The result is irritated nerves and compromised function of the affected organs and tissues.

Our physiotherapists can deliver spinal mobilisations and adjustments to your spine and joints to help improve function for improved nervous system control and health.

How long will it take to get better?

Your prognosis for recovery will depend on your individual situation. Some patients enjoy results quickly while some with more complicated complaints may take slightly longer. We make sure to monitor your progress and modify our recommendations and any treatments as needed.

At our practice, we try to make each individual patient feel as cared for as possible as we know each patient is truly unique. It’s our aim to get our patients to get back to health as soon as possible, as well as providing ways to empower them to help themselves in the forms of tailored exercise plans and other lifestyle recommendations.

The number of appointments you may need at the clinic varies a great deal depending on numerous features. These include the extent of the injury, how long the complaint has been persisting, your level of fitness and how well you follow the suggested treatment plan and exercises given by your physiotherapist.

Our physiotherapists endeavour to promote lifestyle modifications and help each patient design ways to change from the old sickness model of care to the wellness model of care. In short, we should not wait for symptoms to arise before seeing a physiotherapist for the best results. Instead, we recommend following up on a monthly basis after your recovery from injury. From there, we can advise you on elective physiotherapy care.

Can I receive physiotherapy treatment through my EPC?

The latest and most innovative introduction of Enhanced Primary Care Plans (EPCs) allows GPs to refer individuals for physiotherapy if they have been suffering with a chronic condition for more than six months. A chronic condition may include symptoms of musculoskeletal origin like back pain, neck pain, headaches and sports injuries. Physiotherapists work with your GP as part of the team care arrangement for (EPCs). Medicare covers the cost of five $47 treatments in a calendar year and we can help subsidise individuals referred on (EPCs) by their local GP.
